WHAT IS THE HISTORY?

Lord Shiva went to destroy the demons in a chariot. It is believed that the axle of the chariot broke because  Lord Shiva forgot to worship Lord vinayaga. He realised it and prayed Lord Vinayaga to succeed in his mission. As the axle broke in this place A linga was made here naturally.

Since in this place the axle broke(Kooram in tamil)this place got the name "Kooram" which later changed to Koovam. It is also said that lord shiva carried a bow and arrow with him. Thus, lord shiva is praised here as Thiruvilkola nathar('Vil' meaning bow and 'kola' meaning appearance in tamil). This place is also called as Thiru virkolam.

WHAT IS SPECIAL?

As the axle fell on lord Shiva ,there is a small wound on him. So no one including priests should not touch the lingam as it would pain for him. As known from this he is also called theenda thirumeni in tamil. Before huge rain comes linga will look in white colour. And when there is less rain the linga will look in red colour.
